As such, IPC has developed an extensive range of training courses in cooperation with the electronics industry.
PIEK offers IPC training courses on various subjects within the electronics manufacturing industry. Every IPC training course is available on-site at your facility or in an open enrollment training at various locations. The PIEK trainer team conducts the IPC training in English, German, Dutch and French, with other languages available with translator support.
Courses & Certifications Offered
In the electronic manufacturing process, various stages need to be completed before the product is ready. PIEK offers training courses and certification to various IPC standards as detailed below.
1. PCB design
Every piece of electronic equipment starts with a bare PCB (Printed Circuit Board). Before the PCBs can be manufactured, however, they need to be designed. To assist companies with this, PIEK offers IPC design training.
This is a two-stage Designer Certification program (IPC Certified Interconnect Designer-Basic CID & IPC Certified Interconnect Designer-Advanced CID+). The training program provides an objective evaluation of design knowledge: how to transform a schematic into a PCB design, which can be manufactured, assembled and tested in accordance with applicable IPC standards.
The IPC program assesses design knowledge of the designer. After the training, the participants receive an official IPC Designer Certificate, if they pass the exam successfully.
Once the PCBs have been designed, they can be manufactured.
2. PCB fabrication
Program participants will also learn about PCB fabrication and assembly issues that relate to design. IPC standards are the framework for the course content, which applies design principles to product use. During our training, we will work on insights in the necessary knowledge for designing PCB’s. The training complies with the IPC-2221 and IPC-2222 standards.
The IPC-A-600 training and certification program is aimed at improving the quality of PCBs by helping participants improve their understanding of printed board quality issues. The course content is based on the IPC-A-600 Acceptability of Printed Boards document, which is used as a reference for the inspection of bare boards all over the world. While IPC-A-600 covers the basics, the IPC-6012 specification and training covers qualification and performance of rigid printed boards, including single-sided and double-sided PCBs, and covers the full detail including acceptance testing and quality conformance as well as electrical, environmental and mechanical requirements.
3. PCB assembly
The next step in the electronic manufacturing process is to assemble or populate the PCBs.
Original equipment manufacturers (OEM’s) and EMS companies use IPC-A-610 – Acceptability of Electronic Assemblies, a standard published by IPC to ensure that their assemblies meet stringent quality requirements. PIEK offers IPC-A-610 training and certification to assist your company in showing that it is dedicated to delivering quality products. This Training & Certification program of PIEK assures your business of immediate recognition and legitimacy in the electronics industry.
If your company is involved in soldering the PCBs during the manufacturing process, you’ll need your staff to be trained in soldering.
This is where the IPC J-STD-001 standard comes in. IPC J-STD-001 sets a standard for requirements for soldered electrical and electronic assemblies, and it is recognized worldwide as the sole industry-consensus standard covering soldering materials and processes. This document includes support for lead-free manufacturing.
During the production process, sometimes when the process will not always work 100% as intended and rework, repair and modification will be required.
By taking part in an IPC-7711 & IPC-7721 Training & Certification Program, you can have your employees discover the correct practical techniques for rework, repair and modification operations. This can be a money-saving alternative. With this IPC certification, your company can fix the nonconforming PCB’s and PCBA’s itself.
4. Wiring and harnesses
Electronic assemblies can’t work on their own but need to be connected. This is where IPC/WHMA-A-620 comes into play.
For manufacturers and users of wire harness assemblies, PIEK has a training program based on the IPC/WHMA-A-620 standard. It includes extensive criteria for all aspects and techniques used to connect electronic assemblies and components. This standard was developed jointly by members of IPC and the Wire Harness Manufacturers Association (WHMA).

The IPC training programs in the PIEK portfolio are suitable for employees who intend to become Certified IPC Trainers or Certified IPC Specialists. If you want to train employees yourself, then being trained and obtaining the Certified IPC Trainer training certification would be an adequate preparation. Once you are certified as a trainer, you are allowed to train and certify your employees as Certified IPC Specialists.
