IPC/WHMA-A-620 Certification

IPC/WHMA-A-620 CERTIFIED IPC SPECIALIST (CIS)

The IPC/WHMA-A-620 (“Requirements and Acceptance for Cable and Wire Harness Assemblies”) is the most famous IPC standard for cable harness assemblies all over the world. IPC is an American institute that ensures that all knowledge is distributed worldwide by certified IPC trainers through their IPC standards, IPC training programs and IPC training materials. WHMA is an American group of wiring harness manufacturers that provided all the technical information in the standard. The IPC/WHMA-A-620 standard is also called “the photo album of IPC” by which all cable harnesses (in electronics) are inspected and delivered. It is a nice, well-arranged book by which you can easily find (next to each image) what is acceptable and what isn’t allowed. Almost all wiring harness assembly companies around the world that crimp wires or solder them to the printed circuit board produce their wire harness according to this standard.

DO YOU WANT TO LEARN HOW A GOOD WIRE CRIMP CONNECTION AND HOW A GOOD CABLE HARNESS ASSEMBLY LOOKS LIKE? YES YOU CAN!

If you need further theoretical knowledge in cutting/stripping and soldering cables/wires to terminals, crimping wires into contacts, plugging contacts into connectors, insulation displacement connections (flat band cables), inspecting solder connections and the maximum damage/contamination of the end product, and cable harness testing then this standard is the right one for you. This standard is used for the final inspection of the cable assembly (the company that bundles and sells the cables/wire harnesses) and sometimes also as a commodity entry check at the final assembly companies (the company that purchases assembled cable harnesses and installs them in the final housing (box building)). The IPC/WHMA-A-620 CIS training is a training that trains a student/participant as a Certified IPC Specialist (CIS). In this training there are also some optional practical assignments (crimping, soldering, inspection, etc.). This means that the student can work with this standard afterwards and can assess all products with it. This training is suitable for people who work as an operator/inspector in a cable/wire harness assembly company, but also for managers who need more background knowledge in the production process of cable/wire harnesses so that they can better discuss this knowledge with the customer.

The CIS certification training is a modular training and lasts approximately 4 days, at the end of each training module the participant writes a final exam (multiple choice). If the participant has passed the exam of the mandatory module(s) with a minimum score of 70%, he/she will receive an IPC/WHMA-A-620 CIS certificate for this. All further (optional) modules as well as the practical assignments (if applicable) are noted on this IPC certificate. With this IPC certificate you can work as a CIS (Certified IPC Specialist) all over the world. Just like a driver’s license, this IPC certificate is internationally recognized. The certificate is valid for 2 years, you can extend the certificate validation by participating an IPC recertification training. The CIS recertification training can take place in a shorter period of time (at least 1 day). The IPC/WHMA-A-620 CIS can independently solve practical problems in the department.

In this training there are also some optional practical sessions (crimping, soldering, inspection, etc.). This means that the student is an expert in this standard afterwards.

This training is suitable for people who have a lot of experience in wire/cable harness assemblies. The CSE certification training takes approximately 4 days, at the end of the training the participant writes a final exam (100 questions multiple choice). If the participant has passed this exam with a minimum score of 80%, he/she will receive an IPC/WHMA-A-620 CSE certificate for this. With this IPC certificate you can work as a CSE (Certified Standard Expert) all over the world. Just like a driver’s license, this IPC certificate is internationally recognized. The certificate is valid for 2 years, you can extend the certificate validation by participating an IPC recertification training. The CSE recertification training can take place in a shorter period of time (at least 1 day). The IPC/WHMA-A-620 CSE is the designated person who discusses and solves customer problems.

In this training there are also some optional practical sessions (crimping, soldering, inspection, etc.). This means that the student will receive a complete training kit from IPC afterwards with which they can continue to train others (however, this training package does not include practical materials such as crimp pliers, wires, contacts, soldering equipment, etc.).

This training is suitable for people who have a managerial position or have a lot of experience and/or want to transfer their knowledge to their staff/colleagues. If the participant has obtained his CIT certificate, then he/she must conduct at least 1 IPC training per year. The CIT certification training takes about 4 days, at the end of the training the participant writes a final exam (100 questions multiple choice). If the participant has passed this exam with a minimum score of 80%, he/she will receive an IPC / WHMA-A-620 CIT certificate with all related course materials for further training. With this IPC certificate you can work as a CIT (Certified IPC Trainer) all around the world. Just like a driver’s license, this IPC certificate is internationally recognized. The certificate is valid for 2 years, you can extend the certificate validation by participating an IPC recertification training.
